Q&A with Dr. Gay
I have a lot of hobbies, and most of them involve working with my hands and creating. I enjoy baking cakes and repairing cars and machines. For physical activity, I love mountain biking, rock climbing, and snowboarding.
Don’t wait. I want patients to come early and often. I’d much rather tell them that there’s nothing to worry about than have them come in later and say, "I wish you had come earlier when this would have been easier to treat."
My most memorable case is working on a young boy who was only six years old. He had a tumor on his optic nerve. I had to work on the nerve that sends a signal from the eye to the brain. This young boy was having a lot of difficulty with his eye loss of vision. And it also looked abnormal which affected his confidence. It was a very long surgery, but ultimately successful.
Usually tumors behind the eye. It's a very difficult space to get into, and the risks are very high. It is a very delicate surgery. That takes a lot of time and skill.
When I was eight years old, I went to the eye doctor. And I was fascinated by all the machines and equipment.
I had an eye exam and ended up needing glasses. I hated those glasses. And I thought that there should be people that could fix eyes, so nobody would need glasses. Throughout the years, I always had a love of medicine. And I always was pointed towards surgery. As I got older, I looked at multiple different surgery specialties. And in medical school, I fell in love with oculofacial plastic surgery. It combined my love of fixing things. With being able to help people.
